Last Thursday we hosted an opening reception for the exhibition “John Udvardy: A Sculptor’s Vision” in the gallery. The opening attracted people from all over the region; many came from Providence and some came as far as Washington DC and Vermont!

John Udvardy: A Sculptor's Vision

We had a very busy day in the gallery this past weekend installing the sculpture exhibition “John Udvardy: A Sculptor’s Vision”. John arrived with his crew around 2:00pm, and we had indispensable help from Wellesley students Whitney Sheng, Alina Zalucki, Emma Smith, and Anne Tuan during the installation.

This installation was by far the most complex and ambitious undertaking that we’ve done since I started as gallery director three years ago: the exhibition features sixteen sculptures, each with their own pedestal.  All of the sculptures were wrapped and packaged in a specific way to be sure that everything arrived safely into the gallery, requiring special handling and care. Please join us for this extraordinary exhibition at the opening reception next Thursday, April 7 from 4:00-7:00pm!

Last Friday we installed the exhibition “Trigger and Reconfigure”
, an exhibition featuring artists Laura Evans, Abbie Read, Jessica Straus, & Antoinette Winters.  The enormous variety of different two-dimensional and three-dimensional works required a lot of attention to detail in putting the show together. Several sculptures were drilled into the wall, while others sat on bases or shelves installed into the wall. The exhibition opens tomorrow, 4:45-6pm.

Robot Sculpture Workshop

This past Saturday we had an Applied Arts workshop on Robot Sculptures, taught by artist Ann Smith. Ann specializes in robot-like sculptures which are assembled from pieces of old electronics. Her work has been exhibited in galleries all over the US and she has had her work published in several publications as well.

(above) one of Ann’s robot sculpture pieces.

Ann brought an amazing range and quantity of old electronics, many of which were sorted in bins by shape and color.  There was one bin full of all different kinds of wires, one that was full of circular shapes, etc. Ann showed some of her pieces, and then let everyone rummage and go through all of the bins to collect parts for their sculptures. Part of the fun of this process was hunting for the specific parts and pieces that would come together to create the sculptures, or by being inspired by seeing a material that would be visually engaging.

Assembling the sculptures had a lot to do with problem solving. All of the individual parts somehow have to stay together, and it took all of us lots of troubleshooting to figure out how all of the parts could fit together. We used a range of different adhesives and techniques to put things together: duct tape, double stick tape, a glue gun, copper wire, etc.  It was wonderful to see all of the various solutions people came up with.

Below are several of the finished sculptures, it’s amazing to see what people were able to accomplish in just three hours! You can view all of the images from the workshop on our Flickr page.

In April 2011, the Jewett Art Gallery will be presenting “John Udvardy: A Sculptor’s Vision”, a solo exhibition of RISD Professor Emeritus John Udvardy’s work.  Below you can read a statement written by RISD Professor Thomas Lyon Mills, about John’s work as a preview for the exhibition.

From the essay, “John Udvardy’s Cabinet of Art and Marvels”

Totally enigmatic.
Impossibly intricate.
Better to stop speech here.
This language is not for people.
Blessed be jubilation.
Vintages and harvests.
Even if not everyone
Is granted serenity.

Czeslaw Milosz, from A Poem for the End of the Century

“John Udvardy’s sculptures, drawings, and collages invite me into one of the most rarified of experiences – an unforgettable vehicle for contemplation.  His work is masterfully crafted and imbued with secrets, like our own elusive memories and dreams that we forget at our peril.  John’s work is one of the strangest and most satisfying visual experiences one can have: it is as if his work transports all the senses: giving sight, smell, proportion and silence a raw, unpolluted collective power, like wisps of the seemingly lost yet re-discovered essential.  I see things as I never have before, where forms go transparent, disappear, then seem wholly re-born.” -Thomas Lyon Mills, May 2010
