In executing this series of self-portraits, a preoccupation with focus and the act of looking began to thread through the range of conceptual and physical approaches of the project. This format is integral to the work and the way I have been painting, both in setting a more confrontational relationship between the image and the viewer, and in this case literally with myself. In line with the idea of gaze, I am working on a scale where the painting challenges the viewer on a level similar to their own, and so more directly.

With A/Z, I wanted to continue that focus on letters as characters who interact with each other. Straight-laced A falls for the new, exciting Z and tries valiantly to win her attention by showcasing her leadership skills and being “efficient and responsible.” When that fails, she stays up all night, worrying, and the alphabet goes to pieces when she oversleeps the next morning.
